Navigating Life After Surrogacy

Nov 26, 2024 | surrogacy

Surrogacy is a profound, life-changing experience—not only for the intended parents (IPs) but for the surrogate herself. Having been a surrogate mother four times, once even to twin boys, I’ve lived through the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with this incredible journey. However, what many don’t anticipate is the emotional aftermath once the journey concludes.

The Emotional Rollercoaster After Delivery

For surrogates, the process of carrying a child for someone else is filled with excitement and intense interactions. Regular meetings, whether in-person or via Zoom, frequent updates, and the special attention and gifts from IPs contribute to a unique bond. But once the baby is born and the surrogacy is complete, a sudden shift occurs. This shift can feel akin to a breakup. You’re left with a flood of hormones and a profound sense of loss—not for the baby, but for the journey that has just ended.

Navigating the Post-Surrogacy Void

After returning home, many surrogates grapple with a poignant question: What now? It’s common to feel a void after such a significant chapter of your life closes. Many surrogates continue to pump breast milk for the IPs, maintaining a connection and a sense of purpose. But even then, the emotional transition can be challenging.

Planning Ahead: A Strategy for Recovery

One effective strategy is planning something meaningful for yourself as the surrogacy journey winds down. Whether it’s a new hairstyle, a tattoo symbolizing the journey, or a vacation with loved ones, these acts can help transition into the next chapter of your life. It’s also crucial to give yourself a substantial break before considering another surrogacy, using this time to reflect on the long-term impacts of IVF treatments and to focus on regaining physical and mental health.

Personal Reflections: The Costs and Rewards

Reflecting on my personal journey, having eight children over twenty years—including five as a surrogate—has had significant repercussions on my marriage, body, and mental health. Post-surrogacy, I faced challenges such as hormonal imbalances and physical complications, which led to a hysterectomy and other corrective procedures. These experiences highlight the importance of planning for the future, not just financially but also in terms of health and wellbeing.

The Importance of Support and Self-Care

If I were to do it all over again, I would indeed choose to be a surrogate again. However, I would approach it with a deeper awareness of the need for post-journey support. Utilizing counseling services, saving for future medical needs, and seeking out a community of past surrogates for support are all critical steps. These resources can help manage the emotional and physical toll of surrogacy and ensure that you are not navigating the aftermath alone.

Moving Forward

Surrogacy affects more than just the moment; it influences your future and that of your family. Taking the time to attend free counseling sessions, setting aside funds for unforeseen medical expenses, and embracing the support of those who have walked this path before can make all the difference. As surrogates, we give a part of ourselves in the most profound way possible. It’s essential to remember to take care of ourselves with as much dedication as we care for others during their journey to parenthood.
